The resort caters to both foreign tourists and residents of Cambodia, especially people living in Phnom Penh seeking to escape from the city for a short break in the cool mountain air. It is particularly well suited for group team-building activities. Kirirom was home to the development of a hill station that started in 1963. Prince Norodom Sihanouk, then head of state, laid the foundation stone for Kirirom which had 136 private villas by 1967. “The creation of this new city responds to Cambodia’s need for a hill station close to the capital which can be easily accessed,” a French-language publication wrote at the time.
The villas fell into disrepair during Cambodia’s civil war, although the chimney and foundations of the mountain lodge used by Prince Sihanouk can still be seen today.
